Finding Inspiration Through Spiritual Poetry

By Deanne Shepard

The many forms of artistic expression have been known to have powerful impacts on those who observe them. Images have made intense statements and provoked deep thinking, a song can move a person to tears or fill them with happiness and dances have the ability to inspire many emotions. Spiritual poetry is one such genre that speaks to the soul of the individual and addresses some issues on the subconscious level.

A person's spirituality is something that is unique to the individual. It is their own connection to the world that surrounds them, the people in it and the universe as a whole.
This way of thinking has nothing to do with any religion or any type of theological belief system, instead it is a power that lies innate inside each human being, waiting for them to become aware and to seek answers outside the norm.

Poems on this subject are intended to motivate and encourage readers to stretch their comfort zones and to think outside the normal scheme of things. Sometimes they speak of the mystical, magical and the mysterious sides of life. Filled with inspiration, they strive to bring out one's sense of wonder, hope and connection to the universe, the Earth and to the people who reside upon her.

One of the main purposes of these types of poems is to lift up the reader and inspire them and to give them hope when they face loneliness or loss. When a person feels trapped in darkness, the right words can show them the way back up towards the light. Many writers specialize in verbally visualizing life positively to give others a better perspective.

One key purpose of spirituality writings is to try and empower the individual to bring themselves to a higher level of understanding and release negative emotions such as envy, hate and anger. For many, once they realize how vast the universe is and their place in it, they tend to be less self-centered and start to become more self-aware. They switch their life focus on more productive values like positivity, understanding, empathy and insight.

Words strung together in a vividly descriptive manner can open something within the mind and allow the beholder the freedom to celebrate life's many facets. When one learns to step outside the proverbial box, they begin to question what they know and start to explore the connections of everything withing this vast universe and even beyond. Once free to contemplate, the soul can find rejuvenation.

Writing about spirituality is an opportunity for one to share their own beliefs with another. Painting images through clear and proper diction within a creative flow of words is a way to transport another into a whole new realm of understanding and awareness. By allowing others to observe one's own enlightenment, a difference could be made in the life of someone who has a need for such encouragement.

The standard accepted rules of writing do not necessarily apply to this particular genre. Words combinations are used in unique ways and the beginning and the end may not always be where expected as the writer creates their fantastical vision. Regardless of the individual's style, the idea is to spread enlightenment and to encourage, inspire and uplift the readers.
