How To Report Unethical Treatment By Psychotherapist

By Aimee Schwartz

Some people have mental disorders. They want to get rid of these conditions so they seek the assistance of medical practitioners. These professionals will be able to help them with their situations.

However, at times, the professionals could be inflicting harm on them. In this case, a patient should be reporting immediately an unethical treatment by psyhotherapist. She should be considering several factors when doing such.

The individual could be noticing warning signs when experiencing harassment. The practitioner could be telling sexual jokes and stories to his patient. He might also be giving seductive looks to his client. He might also be discussing the sex life of his patient excessively. He might also be intimately touching her body parts. He might even be hugging, sitting close to, touching or lying next to his clientele.

The individual might also be experiencing a special treatment from the practitioner. The professional could be asking her for a date. She could also be receiving flowers or gifts from him. She might also be hearing sweet words from the therapist. There are also instances where the therapist will be confiding his personal secrets with her. He might even be changing his business policy just to be accommodating her.

There are several methods that these individuals can do to be able to report these incidents. First, they can go with administrative actions. Typically, these practitioners receive licenses from certain licensing boards. The licenses will allow the therapists to legally practice their professions and render their services. If the patients will file complaints and submit them to these boards, the authorities may suspend or even revoke the licenses of the professionals.

Professional association actions can also be gone with. Memberships are possessed by most professionals with specific associations. Codes of ethics are typically established by these associations that should be followed by all members. After their complaints are filed with the associations, investigations will be conducted by certain officers. Once the guilt of the therapists are proven, they will be banned from these associations. However, their services can be still be rendered although bad reputations will already be possessed by them.

The individuals can also go with civil actions. With these options, they can file civil charges with civil courts and seek money for the damages they experienced. Before they do so, they will need to look for good lawyers who will represent their cases in courts. These legal practitioners can also suggest the best options that they can do for this undertaking. The clients may also engage in media circuses especially if the therapists are famous.

She could also be going with a criminal action. This action is appropriate for one who had a sexual contact with her practitioner. She could be contacting a law enforcement agency and officers will be investigating her case. After finding enough proof, they could be charging a criminal case against the practitioner and serving him with a penalty like fine or a prison time.

Whatever action she will be going with, she should be taking note of the duration which she could be filing her complaint, or its statute of limitation. This statute usually lasts for six months from the incident. She should not be enduring this relationship for a long time.
