How Can I Understand My Spiritual Life Journey

By Kristen Baird

Spiritual life can be compared to a great extent to physical life. The desire to loose weight, exercise, quit smoking or make such lifestyle changes is never easy. However, it is not impossible. The journey begins when you proclaim in your heart that I will be in control of my spiritual life journey.

As a human being, every day is a struggle to become a deeper and more meaningful person. The challenge lies in the fact that unlike physical change, inner change does not have tangible beacons. By going to the gym, taking health pills and restraining from visiting certain places, you can achieve physical change. The spirit is different because it is untouchable.

Internal change is the basis of any transformation. The decision to be a better person must come from within. The difficulty of spiritual change lies in the lack of something tangible to hold on. There is an inner self that yearns for authenticity and purity. This should be your focus as you seek to take charge of your destiny.

Every individual has an inner voice that directs actions and thoughts. It is this voice that instructs you on what to avoid and what to do. Persons who have found their purpose in life attribute it to listening to this inner voice. It directs your thoughts which translate into actions. Failure to heed to the dictates of this voice leads to internal conflict.

Being in touch with your inner dimension will make you long for a better self. Experts have suggested that you should spend time in discernment in order to understand the inner calling. Only by so doing are you able to lock out distracting voices and identify the right path for you.

There are several crucial questions that must be answered during discernment. They range from, What if I was more loving? Kinder? Compassionate? Generous? Humble? Less judgmental? Less selfish? More patient, etc? Finding an answer to the question is a crucial step toward regaining control.

Expert are still struggling to understand if change can be achieved though exclusive individual effort. They are of the opinion that external intervention is necessary. An example is a house whose renovation requires new furniture and installations. The external force required is your religious commitment. It will offer direction to your life.

Spiritual formation is a universal characteristic of human beings. It determines your attitudes, values and moral standing. It is through neglect that the inner being weakens leading to deviation. In order to restore this, you must undergo a spirit-led process that brings you as close as possible to the likeness of Christ. The bible says that we must endeavor to be like Christ.

It is ironical that inner growth cannot occur through own endeavor yet you must be an active participant. By desiring and accepting to take the right step, you are paving way for transformation. Your mind can now see the path ahead more clearly and identify the steps that must be taken. God intervenes through his grace to restore your life.
