By Leslie Ball

Reading to your child from an early age offers a lot of benefits on different levels. From an education perspective, research shows that kids who love and enjoy books with their carers or parents tend to have larger vocabularies, better language comprehension and higher cognitive skills than those who have never been introduced to books and reading at home.

Reading to your children may also open up all possibilities of learning and let them familiarize new sounds, rhythms and words. They can be introduced to several kinds of new subjects or topics to talk about. Listening to stories help develop their creative imaginations and may bring them to another world. Show your children how much enjoyment you get out of books. Read close by while playing in the garden and have a book beside your bed.

You also have to tell your kids the language used. From the recipe, to the religions and fantasy storied. Show them the importance of language in the world. Never spend more money in making your own bookshelves or library as they can be acquired from second hand or charity shops in your area.

If your kids are not interested in any book you purchased for them, you should not think it as a waste of money. That is why, it is better to check on some supermarkets or online shops that offers a book at friendly costs to catch the attention of your kids.

Keep in mind that once you read, it should be pleasurable so choose a time when your child is receptive to listening rather than forcing a book on then when they are not in the mood. The ideal time is at bedtime so making a bedtime routine as early as possible is essential. Of course, make sure that you are in the mood to read. You have to show enjoyment and enthusiasm to get positive benefit from the experience.

So, if you are not enjoying this routine, they can also fee than from the manner or tone of voice which cold put them off the importance of reading books. Remember that even if they are still very young, you can already start to introduce them to books. As you can see, babies love bright colors and textures. So, this would be a good start of stimulating them.

It is important to choose an age appropriate title and be aware of the length of the stories. Young kids have usually short attention spans and they will struggle to cope with a very long story. Never force to get their attention, you have to come back to that book on another time. Focus on the meaning and enjoyment rather than accuracy.
