Discovering The Secrets Behind The Talk Phone

By Ann Schmidt

While Smartphones are somewhat new, walkie talkies have been around for quite some time. The application access and operations of smart phones might be new in comparison. However, talk phone technology has existed since the days of Alexander Graham Bell. As such, it is only the cellular, wireless and prepaid technologies which are new in these new so-called smart models.

Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish scientist. The first to be credited with patenting a working model. Mr. Bell's brother, father and grandfather assisted in the development when it came to speech and elocution. Then, after much research and experimentation, Alexander's design was awarded the first U. S. Patent for a working model in 1876.

Ultimately, credit for the first working telephone was given to Alexander Graham Bell. For, had the scientist not decided to research hearing devices in hope of helping a deaf wife, the telephone as we know it may have never been invented. For, it is Alexander who created the first working model, thanks to a little help from a father, a sibling and the family dog in 1876.

While the telephone is primarily Alexander Graham Bell's greatest accomplishment, the scientist also invented several other communication forms. These include, optical or visual communication, black box communication for aeronautics and hydrofoil systems. Although, it was not until much later in life that any of these other forms became valid modes of communication, or as popular as the scientist's initial invention.

After becoming quite impressed with the boys interest in a "mechanical man, " with a simulated human voice at an exhibit, the father decided to pay all expenses associated with building a replica. After the father promised a surprise gift if the boys completed the project, interest grew even more. Then, after much research and development, the project reached completion.

The replica looked like a man made out of metal and had a simulated human voice just like the one at the exhibit. It was at this moment that Alexander and brother, Melville decided to become scientists. After which, Alexander met his wife and began research on hearing devices and other communications oriented systems. It was this research that would later provide Mr. Bell with the first United States patent for the first working model of a telephone.

For, one of Bell's most interesting experimental subjects was the family dog. Most likely considered animal abuse by today's standards, the scientist worked to create an ongoing growling pattern. At which time, Mr. Bell would attempt to move the dog's lips and adjust the vocal cords to produce a specific sound. One sound the scientist created sounded like the dog was asking "How are you grandma?"

While the concept of talking dogs is nothing new with the many clips now on video sites like YouTube, Alexander's talking dog was not only the first dog to talk but most likely also the first to be included in this type research. A research project which help develop a system which could transmit sound waves. In addition, the process assisted in the discovery of using tuning forks to explore overall resonance and volume. After which, the scientist, with a little help from a loving father, brother, grandfather and the family dog completed work on the first telephone as a two-way communications device.
