Winning, Happiness and Charlie Sheen

As you might have noticed, the word "win" is really important to me. In fact, it's so important that it's a core pillar of my business! Today I want to share what "winning" really means to me (hint: it's all about happiness)... and gosh darn it I really wish Charlie Sheen hadn't hijacked that word!

There's an unspoken understanding in our world that in order to win, somebody else has to lose. I'd like to banish that understanding because truthfully, winning has nothing to do with someone else losing, or even competitors at all, for that matter.

Happiness is the Simplest Joy
Happiness is truly free, but we have to do the work to find our gratitude and jump-for-joyness. Every human being has something to be grateful and happy for every single day - we just need to look for it.

I'm sure you've heard of the concept of keeping a gratitude journal. I like to call it a happiness journal, because I know that feeling grateful for the people and things in my life makes me happy. Cue Pharell Williams' Happy song here.
At the end of the day, I write down at least one thing for which I am grateful. It might be as simple as having clean water to drink (hey, if you really break it down to the lowest common denominator, clean water should make us really happy! Our bodies are 60% water, after all, so clean water is a really good thing).

How to Access Your (Free!) Happiness
Try this easy exercise: at some point during the day, it could be the beginning or the very end, close your eyes and think of what you're happy about.

If you need help finding something, ask yourself these questions: What was the best part of your day? What tickled or excited you today? What surprised you, who made you smile?
Letting yourself sit in the joy of those memories is a powerful way to access your happiness and carry it with you through the day.

Laugh
When I was applying to be an LA Country Sheriff, I had to take a polygraph test. I had no idea what they were going to ask me, and all I could imagine was being hooked up to a machine that was measuring my most subtle physical reactions. As you may imagine, I was extremely nervous!
I was driving through downtown Los Angeles on my way to the test, and I looked up and saw a billboard for Jack in the Box. It featured Jack, the character with a huge round head, but he had a bowl cut of black hair because they were announcing their Fiesta Bowls. Jack looked ridiculous - everyone knows he is bald!
I started cracking up. Before I knew it, I was crying because I was laughing so hard, and suddenly 80% of my stress disappeared. I felt so much lighter!
